Seraphin Gallery proudly presents its next exhibition of 2014 with Joe Mooney entitled “Facets.” The exhibition will run from June 13 through July 20, 2014 with an opening reception on Friday, June 13, from 6 – 8 PM.
A facet can be defined as, "an aspect or phase of a personality." For Joe Mooney, this exhibition of recent work is a culmination of his thoughts and experiences, taking shape in eleven sculptures, each with their own unique journey from inception to completion. "Facets" showcases these works, made of steel or stainless steel, all from 2013 - 2014.
While Mooney has completed sculptures in wood, as in his "Prophet" series, he is very drawn to working in steel because of the physicality involved. And unlike many other artists, he prefers to show his cutting edges. This serves to reveal the artist's hand in his works, as well as to create a rougher and more tactile appearance. Steel is also a more dynamic material, creating a active relationship between shape and space. Its lines curve and turn as he creates each piece, resulting in a form that is caught in both space and time.
Mooney is an avid reader, gaining inspiration from the words and stories he has consumed over a lifetime. The theme of the struggling hero has largely influenced his work, seen clearly in his "Gilgamesh" and "Moses" series. These heroic figures, real and fictional, reflect the same struggle encountered during Mooney's process, between the gesture he is creating and the space pushing back against it.
