March 2 - March 23, 2018
Seraphin Gallery presents Small Talk, a lively pop-up exhibition carefully curated by Alyssa Laverda and Ashley Stahl, on view from March 2 - March 23, 2018. There will be a public opening on March 2, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., as well as a private collector’s reception on March 1 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
This group selection of CFEVA and Seraphin Gallery artists introduces a banter between individual works based on visual relationships and artistic concepts. The works are grouped and juxtaposed together for their humorous and tongue-in-cheek quips, concept-driven and contextual narratives, or associations in their formal qualities of line, shape, light, and color across a wide range of artistic media.
Presented solely in small format, these pieces possess a preciousness that speak in the form of intricate detail and delicate handling. Small Talk is a give and take, not only between Seraphin Gallery and CFEVA, but also between diverse artists from a variety of different cultural backgrounds, established and emerging, from Philadelphia and beyond.
From collectors to contemporary art enthusiasts, visitors will experience a presentation that captivates and inquires. Coupled objects, seemingly disparate at first glance, will form relationships as the viewer looks closer. Paired works, at times, will be comical, playful, even cheeky, but the sobering sophistication of emotional and experiential expression, and the exquisite, raw craftsmanship of each artist will be on full display. The lead image slicing Phillip Scarpone’s Ricordi Rotante Sediment #2 and Kay Healy’s Herb’s Father’s Tools exemplifies the dichotomy at play in Small Talk. These two works create opposing arguments—one of elegant masculinity through concrete and bronze versus another of femininity through screen-printed tools boasting soft edges and delicate lines.
