Alexander Vasilyevich Shevchenko (1883-1948) was a Russian and Soviet painter, graphic artist, art theorist, and avant-garde artist.
In the midst of the struggle for new forms in art in the 1910s, Shevchenko was the most traditional of the artists. Larionov, in his assessment of Shevchenko's painting, wrote that he "introduced the forms of Cubists, Futurists, and Radians into a strictly academic painting." Shevchenko was drawn to new forms not only as a practicing artist but also as a researcher and experimenter. He was particularly fascinated by neo-primitivism. In search of plastic unity of form, Shevchenko turned to the work of Paul Cézanne in the early 1920s.
