"Joe Mooney takes hard, cold, rigid, heavy gauge steel-thoroughly inanimate- and cuts, bends, welds, and wields to create forms that seem to be the antithesis of raw material. They emerge light, airy, pliant, inviting - and absolutely organic. In fact, that duality in the substance and its appearance is at the very essence of Joe Mooney's work. "The historical event that occurred on October 17, 1967 when a battalion of 155 American soldiers fought against 1500 Viet Cong and were ambushed in the Battle of Ong Than in Viet Nam. Of the 155 soldiers, 59 were killed and 75 were wounded. The images of the sculptures portray the dsetructive impact of that battle."
